What You Need to Know
What you need to know before your surgery

This information is intended to provide information to increase the safety and comfort of your surgical experience. Each surgeon will have their own pre and post-surgical care instructions that will be given to you directly. Their specific instructions should be followed.

  • Labs and Tests

Prior to admission to YES Surgery Centre your Surgeon may request that you have screening tests performed to assess your readiness for surgery. You will also be provided with a few forms that need to be completed at least three weeks before your surgery date. This information will be reviewed by the Surgery Centre before you can be admitted for elective surgery.

All patients that are not fully vaccinated will be required to provide a negative COVID-19 PCR test completed within 72 hours of their arrival time for surgery. Your Surgeon’s office will be in contact with you to ensure this is competed within the correct timeframe.

Patients that are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 will not need to complete a COVID-19 test, but will be asked to provide proof of vaccination to the surgery centre.

Upon arrival all patients will be asked to present a government issued photo ID.

  • Fasting guidelines

If you are having a GENERAL ANESTHETIC or I.V. SEDATION, you must not eat or drink anything after midnight (12:00AM) before your surgery (no gum or candies either)Approved medications can be taken with a sip of water. Speak with your surgeon directly about any medication questions. It is important to have an empty stomach at the time of surgery.

If these fasting guidelines given to you have not been followed correctly, your surgery may be delayed or cancelled. If you have any questions please call you surgeon’s office or YES Surgery Centre

  • What to Wear

Please wear loose comfortable clothing on the day of surgery. It is advised that you wear tops that open in the front and do not need to go over your head (button or zipper) to increase ease of dressing after surgery.

Leave any valuables at home and come to the facility free of creams, deodorant, perfume and makeup.Patients should remove all jewelry, hair accessories and piercings prior to arrival. If you are unable to remove something, please discuss this with your Surgeon’s office prior to arrival.

There are no patient lockers for valuables available and YES Surgery Centre cannot be held responsible for these items.

  • When to Arrive

Your Surgeon’s office is responsible for informing you of your arrival time for surgery. Give yourself plenty of time for travel and unexpected traffic delays.

You and your caregiver must be reachable by phone and available to arrive earlier or later on the day of your surgery. Please do not make any other commitments for your time on this day other than your surgery.

Your transportation must be reliable and flexible as there can be unplanned changes to your procedure start time or your discharge time. Public transportation is not a suitable option for such an important event.

We always do our best to minimize time inconveniences for everyone involved. However, it is not possible to control some schedule changes on the day of surgery and your cooperation and understanding is appreciated.

YES Surgery Centre is not a place for children, pets or escorts other than your driver/caregiver.

  • During Surgery

Once you are admitted to the Surgery Centre, you will be in the care of our health care team.

Outpatient Surgery and Anesthesia are very safe. However, there are risks involved related to the surgery and anesthetic you are having.

Your surgeon will have discussed the risks and benefits of your particular operation in detail prior to your surgery.

You will see your Anesthesiologist prior to the operation and he/she will be able to answer any further questions you may have about this aspect of your care.

Your clothing will be placed into a zippered garment bag and transported to the recovery room area designated just for you.

  • After Surgery

After surgery your designated care provider will be contacted and provided with an estimated time of discharge.

Modern anesthesia and post anesthetic care will make your recovery safe, comfortable and fast. Our dedicated health care teams are experts and will guide you through this process. Many patients are fearful of post-operative pain or nausea and vomiting after surgery. We utilize many different strategies to minimize these issues. You should approach your surgery and your recovery with confidence. If you have concerns about these issues you should discuss this with your surgeon directly.

Once you have met our specific discharge criteria, your care provider will be invited into the discharge area to review post-anesthetic and post-surgical instructions. Our policy is to deliver you in a wheelchair to your care giver’s car or an appropriate means of transportation.  You are not permitted to drive a vehicle for at least 24 hours after surgery

After you have left the facility, you should communicate directly with your surgeon if you are experiencing difficulties during your recovery.

  • Accommodations

YES Surgery Centre is conveniently located across the street from the Sandman Signature Hotel in Langley, BC. They have restful and spacious accommodations as well as excellent food services.

YES Surgery Centre has formed a partnership with this hotel to provide our out of town patients with a preferred rate. Visit the Sandman Hotel website.

  • Air travel prior to surgery

Your surgeon will provide you with specific air travel instructions. You should follow the advice of your surgeon’s office

In general, flights longer than 3 hours are not recommended immediately prior to or after your proposed elective surgery. Longer flight air travel can place you at an additional risk of Deep Vein Thrombosis and will expose you to many infectious agents from other passengers.

Specific post-operative instructions will be provided by your surgeon. It is important that a responsible adult caregiver be available to escort to and from the surgery centre. Your caregiver is required to accompany you to “check-in” at the Surgery Centre in order to review important instructions about your facility discharge and post anesthetic care.

On leaving the Surgery Centre, an adult caregiver must accompany you home, who may either drive you or accompany you home in a taxi. A responsible adult must remain at home with you the rest of that day and night.  Do not use or rely upon public transportation.

If you do not have a caregiver arranged and available on arrival to the facility, your procedure will be cancelled and the financial policies of YES Surgery Centre will apply.
